Uttar Pradesh state formation:

During British time, Uttar Pradesh was known as “United Province” and after the independence of India, United Province was renamed on 24 January 1950 and Known as “Uttar Pradesh”. On 9 November 2000, new state Uttarakhand carved out from Uttar Pradesh.


1. Uttar Pradesh covers 240928 sq. Km areas(7.34% of the total area of India) and 4th largest state in area wise in India. Uttar Pradesh is generally divided into Indo-Gangetic Plains(most part), Terai region, foothills of Shivalik region and Vindhyan range.

2. The northern part of the state consists of Indo-Gangetic Plains and south part consist, Vindhyan Range. Gangetic plains of Indo-Gangetic Northern plains consist of plains of Ganga river, Yamuna doab, Ghaggar river plains and Terai region. These plains have fertile alluvial soils which are suitable for intensive agriculture. This region has the highest population densities in India.

3. The Ganga river, the Yamuna river, the Ghaggar river, the Gomti river, the Chambal river and Saryu river drainage into Uttar Pradesh. The Ganga river and the Yamuna river confluence into Allahabad. The Chambal river made badland topography.

Uttar Pradesh consists of Parliamentary form of Government and the chief minister is head of state government. Uttar Pradesh legislature is a bicameral legislative assembly with 403 seats and legislative council with 100 seats.


(A) Uttar Pradesh has an intensive agriculture-based economy. Two-third population depends upon agriculture. Western and Central Uttar Pradesh is famous for its granary production due to its fertile alluvial soil of Gangetic plains of Indo-Gangetic Plains with extensive canal irrigation system. Rice, Sugarcane and Wheat are the main crops of Uttar Pradesh. Horticulture productivity is also very high in Mangoes, Strawberry, Potato and other fruits etc.

(B) Many industries based activities developed into Uttar Pradesh. Leather industry(Kanpur), Metal industry(Moradabad), Sports items based Industry(Meerut) and IT industry(Ghaziabad) are some prominent industries situated in Uttar Pradesh.


Uttar Pradesh covers 6.88% forest area and has a tropical deciduous forest. The Terai region consists of elephant grass(tall grass)  with swamp areas and these areas are habitat for elephants. Dudhwa National park and Pilibhit forest area are tiger reserves in Uttar Pradesh. Dudhwa National Park has half the population of Swamp deer in India.


According to the 2011 census, Uttar  Pradesh is the most populous state of India.

Uttar Pradesh has developed very connectivity to all major cities. Most part of the state is plains to it easy to develop transport infrastructure.

(1) Uttar Pradesh is a land of many Hindu Gods birthplaces such as Lord Ram in Ayodhya and Lord Krishna in Mathura etc. Varanasi is famous for Lord Shiva temple “Kashi Vishwanath temple” on the bank of river Ganga. Varanasi Ghats are mentioned in the Hindu scriptures which are the holiest place(total 87 Ghats in banks of river Ganga).

(2) Mathura-Vrindavan is also known as “ Brij-Bhoomi” associated with Lord Krishna and situated on the bank of river Yamuna.

(3) Famous Kumbh Mela is held every twelve years in Allahabad on the confluence of river Ganga and Yamuna. Ayodhya is situated on river Saryu and associated with Lord Ram. 

(4) Gautam Buddha delivered his first sermon to his Pupils at Sarnath near the confluence of rivers of the Ganga and the river Gomti.

(1) Many monuments situated in Uttar Pradesh belong to different dynasties and empires.  TajMahal (Agra), Agra Fort(Agra), Fatehpur Sikri complex(Fatehpur Sikri)) are some of the best examples of Mughal dynasty architecture.

(2) Taj Mahal, Agra fort and Fatehpur Sikri are UNESCO heritage sites.

(3) Bara Imambara built by the nawab of Lucknow. Allahabad Fort, Ramnagar Fort (in Ramnagar), Jhansi ka Quila(Jhansi), Akbar’s Tomb are famous historical places in Uttar Pradesh.

Culture and Festivals: 


Kathak is one of six classic dances in India which belongs to Lucknow and Banaras Gharana. Raslila, Swang and Dhmal are some other dances famous in Uttar Pradesh.


Uttar Pradesh is a place of Hindustani classical music. Swami Haridas was the teacher of great Indian musician Tansen( Court Musician in Mughal emperor Akbar).
