The Prime minister of India is head of the Council of Ministers which is the decision making body for India. So that Prime minister of India is known as “Chief executive of the government of India”. There have been 14 Prime Ministers since Indian independence.

Facts about Prime Minister of India:

1.       Pt.  Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India and the longest-serving Prime Minister of India. First Prime Minister to receive Bharat Ratna Award.

2.       Indira Gandhi was the first woman Prime Minister of India.

3.       Morarji Desai was the first non-congress Prime Minister of India.

4.       Morarji Desai was the only Prime Minister of India who got the highest civilian award of India “Bharat Ratna Award” and the highest civilian award of Pakistan “Nishan-E-Pakistan”.

5.       Rajiv Gandhi was the youngest Prime Minister of India.

6.       Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the first non-congress Prime Minister who completed his five-year tenure.

7.       Narendra Modi is the longest-serving non-congress Prime Minister of India. He was the first Prime Minister born after India’s Independence.



8.       Only Uttar Pradesh gave more than half Prime Minister to India such as Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Charan Singh, Vishwanath Pratap Singh, Chandra Shekar, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

9.       Charan Singh was the only Prime Minister of India who never attended any meeting of Parliament.

10.   Only five Prime Ministers (Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira  Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi) work more than one term.

Prime Ministers of India:

1.       Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was known as  “Architecture of Modern India” due to their development works such as Dams, infrastructure IIT, IIM, and AIIMS, etc.

2.      Lal Bahadur Shastri started the white revolution in India and gave the famous slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kissan”. First Person who received the Bharat Ratna Award after death.



3.      Indira Gandhi started the “Green Revolution” for self-sufficient in crop production and the Nationalisation of Indian Banks. Emergency declared during their reign. “Operation Blue Star was started during their reign. Indira Gandhi was the first woman who received the Bharat Ratna Award. She was the person who became Prime Minister as a member of Rajya Sabha. Indira Gandhi gave the slogan “ Garibi Hatao” in 1971 and imposed maximum times President rules in India.



4.       Rajiv Gandhi was well known for revolutionary changes in the IT sector(Information technology). He introduced financial reforms and Anti Defection law. During his tenure, he gave the slogan “ Bikari Hatao”.

5.       V.P. Singh:  He implemented the Mandal Commission report for India’s backward castes. He also formed the Interstate council in 1990 to maintain better relationships between states.

6.       P.V. Narsingha Rao: He was the first south Indian who served India as a Prime Minister.  He introduced many financial reforms for the economic development of India. He referred to “ Father of Indian Economic Reforms”.

7.       Atal Bihari Vajpayee:  He was the first Prime Minister who addressed the UNO in the Hindi Language.


He gave the famous slogan “ Jai Jawan, Jai Kissan, Jai Vignan”.
